Common questions
How much does an inground pool cost in Tyler, TX?
Our estimate for the pool alone: about $35,000–54,000 for a small vinyl liner pool, $45,000–105,000 for fiberglass, and $52,000–130,000 for gunite, depending on size. Most yards also need a deck, a fence and a permit, which add roughly $8,000–24,000. River Pools puts a turnkey Texas fiberglass job at $45,000–85,000 and up (River Pools, 2025).
What is the least expensive kind of pool to put in?
Vinyl liner costs least on day one. It loses some of that edge over the years, since liners wear out and get replaced. Fiberglass costs more to start and the least to own, because there is no plaster to redo (This Old House).
Is fiberglass or gunite better for East Texas?
Both work here. Most Tyler builders are gunite shops, so concrete is the local default and fits any shape. Fiberglass goes in faster, has a smooth surface that needs fewer chemicals, and never needs re-plastering, but you choose from factory shapes no wider than a truck can haul, about 16 ft.
Is red clay a problem for a pool?
It mostly means harder digging. Common Tyler soils such as Kirvin and Cuthbert have a sandy topsoil over red clay that starts within about a foot of the surface, often with chunks of ironstone (USDA). Expect more dirt to haul, and ask how the builder will keep water from collecting against the shell.
Will expansive soil crack my pool?
Tyler's red clays usually swell less than the black clays west of here on the Blackland Prairie, which USDA classes as a different, more expansive clay type (USDA). Some lots still move with wet and dry seasons. A soil test, or a look at the Web Soil Survey, tells you what is under your yard.
What if my yard is deep sand?
Parts of the county sit on deep, loose sand (USDA: Darco). Sand drains well, but the sides of the hole can slump while it is open, so crews may cut a wider hole or brace it. One local builder warns that soft sandy soil can collapse a pool's walls if it is not handled (Texas Crystal Blue Pools).
Do I need a permit for a pool in Tyler?
Yes. Tyler's development code says no pool or spa may be built until a permit is issued, and it must sit at least 5 ft from the house (UDC 10-79(j), via cityrulelookup). Applications and inspection requests go through the city's eTRAKiT portal. Your builder normally handles it.
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Tyler?
Inside the city, any pool holding more than 18 in of water has to be enclosed. In single-family zones the fence, wall or building must be at least 4 ft high; other pools need a taller barrier (Tyler Code Sec. 6-14). Gates that shut and latch on their own are the norm. Confirm with the city before you order a fence.
What about lots outside the city limits?
Check first whether you are in the city at all: the county's map site shows it. Most rural lots run on a septic system, and the pool, the dig and the trucks must stay off the tank and the drain field (TCEQ septic rules). Lake and gated neighborhoods often add their own deed or HOA rules.
Does Texas license pool builders?
No. Texas has no state pool-builder license (PoolDial), so judge a company by its reviews, insurance and written warranty. The wiring is different: ask for the name of the electrician and look up the license on the TDLR search.
How long does a pool take to build?
Once the hole is dug, a fiberglass pool is often finished in two to four weeks of site work. Gunite usually runs four to eight weeks of work plus curing time. Waiting for a slot on the schedule and for the permit can add several weeks, especially in spring (our estimates).
When should I build a pool in Tyler?
Sign in fall or early winter. May, June and October are the wettest months here and July is the driest (NOAA normals), so a job started between November and March is usually ready for Memorial Day, and builders have more open dates in the off-season.
How do most families pay for a pool?
Cash, a home equity loan or line of credit, or an unsecured pool loan. Pool loans usually run 2–7 years at about 6–36% APR depending on credit; equity borrowing is cheaper but uses your house as security (NerdWallet). There are no pool rebates.
Is Tyler Pool Builders a pool company?
No. Tyler Pool Builders is a free referral service. We send your request to one local builder, who visits your yard and quotes. The builder may pay us for the referral; you pay us nothing.
