Fiberglass next to vinyl and gunite
| Option | Fiberglass | Vinyl liner | Gunite / concrete |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our estimate, small to large | $45,000–105,000 | $35,000–88,000 | $52,000–130,000 |
| Site work, once dug (estimate) | Two to four weeks | Three to five weeks | Four to eight weeks, then curing |
| Shapes | Factory molds, about 16 ft wide at most | Rectangles and simple curves | Any shape, with spa, bench or ledge |
| In red clay or sand | Needs a firm, level gravel bed | Walls need solid backfill | Steel and concrete span soft spots best |
| Long-term care | No re-plastering; gelcoat stays smooth | New liner every several years | Re-plaster about every 10–15 years (estimate) |
| Tyler builders | A few (Pools East lists Latham shells) | Ask; few advertise it | Most local companies |
These are our estimates for a finished pool with pump, filter, coping and start-up. We set them from This Old House, River Pools and Fixr (2025–2026), leaning on River Pools' Texas figures, and checked them in November 2026. Decking, fencing, permits and add-ons are priced on their own. A builder confirms after walking your lot.
How a shell goes into East Texas ground
The crew digs a hole slightly bigger than the shell and lays a bed of crushed stone or sand that is leveled carefully, because the shell will sit exactly on it. The shell is lifted in, plumbed, and then the pool is filled with water at the same pace as the backfill goes in around it, so pressure stays even on both sides. In red clay, ask what backfill they use; clean gravel drains better than the clay that came out of the hole. In deep sand, the worry is the sides of the hole slumping before the shell is set.
Sizes and shapes
Every model comes from a mold, from small plunge pools up to about 16 by 40 ft, roughly the largest shell that can be trucked to a house. Many have a built-in tanning ledge, bench or steps. If you want a free-form shape, a very deep end or a large attached spa, gunite is the better fit.
Who installs fiberglass around Tyler
Pools East in south Tyler builds both gunite and fiberglass and lists Latham and Imagine shells on its site (Pools East). River Pools Northeast Texas, a franchise based in Paris, TX, mentions homeowners from Tyler to Longview (River Pools NE Texas); ask whether your town is in its range. We don't rank installers. Check reviews and the warranty terms of both the shell maker and the installer.
Owning one
The gelcoat is slick, so algae has less to hold on to through a Tyler summer, and there is no plaster to replace. Salt systems are easy on it. Keep the water balanced, since chemistry that is off for months can stain or fade the finish, and ask the builder before you ever drain it.
