Four soils you are likely to dig into
| Soil | What USDA describes | What it means for a pool |
|---|---|---|
| Kirvin | Sandy loam over red clay from about 11 in, with ironstone fragments; a dense layer at 40–60 in. Its reference site is in Smith County | Slow digging below a foot; more spoil; drainage behind the walls |
| Cuthbert | Sandy loam over dark red clay from about 8 in, mostly on 8–25% slopes, with ironstone and sandstone pieces on the surface | Sloped lots; likely retaining work; rocky digging |
| Bowie | Sandy loam over clay loam; a perched water table at 3.5–5 ft in winter and early spring in most years | Water may seep into a winter dig; plan pumping and drainage |
| Darco | Deep loamy sand over the Carrizo and Queen City sands; drains very fast | Easy digging, but the hole walls can slump; shell needs firm bedding |

Red clay: hard digging, slow drainage
The red color comes from iron. The clay itself is firm when dry and sticky when wet, and it drains slowly. Rainwater that soaks through the sandy topsoil can sit on top of the clay and collect against the outside of a pool. Good builders backfill with gravel near the shell, slope the deck away from the water, and add drains where the yard is flat. The ironstone chunks are why some crews bring a bigger machine or a breaker.
Is Tyler soil expansive?
Less than many parts of Texas. USDA classes our red clays as a "mixed, semiactive" type, while Houston Black, the famous swelling clay of the Blackland Prairie to the west, is "smectitic" (USDA), which is the kind that heaves the most. That said, some Smith County lots do shrink and swell with drought and rain, and local foundation companies see it. If your house has foundation movement, mention it to the builder and consider a soil test before you sign.
Deep sand
Sandy lots drain fast, which is good for a deck. The risk is during the dig: loose sand can slide into the hole before the shell or steel goes in. Crews handle it with a wider cut, sloped sides, or temporary bracing. A Tyler builder puts it plainly: sandy and soft soils "can collapse the pool's walls" if they are not handled (Texas Crystal Blue Pools).
